This book is a chronological review of the career of Dr. Thaddeus V. Gromada, Professor Emeritus of East European History at New Jersey City University and past President and Executive Director of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA). Gromada traces in detail his record of activities and achievements since 1959 as a scholar, teacher, administrator, organizer of academic and cultural events and activist. As an advocate he promoted the improvement of history/social studies instruction in our schools, championed cultural pluralism and inter-ethnic cooperation in our society, advanced knowledge about Poland’s history, culture and the contributions of the Polish American group (Polonia), also encouraged scholarly and cultural exchanges between Poland and the United States. The book in addition contains a collection of selected statements and articles by Gromada, which reflect his concerns and the issues he encountered. About the Author: Thaddeus V. Gromada received his MA and Ph.D. in East Central European History from Fordham University under the mentorship of the Polish historian Oskar Halecki. Currently he is Professor Emeritus of European History at New Jersey City University, where he organized Multi-Ethnic and Immigrant Studies, which included Polish Studies. Gromada is author, editor, contributor to several books dealing with Polish foreign policy in the interwar period, Polish-Czech-Slovak relations, American Immigration and Ethnic history and Polish Highlander folk culture as well as author of numerous articles in scholarly journals. In 1989 he issued an acclaimed report on the status of East European Studies in the secondary schools of New Jersey as chair of Governor Thomas H. Kean’s Commission. He also served as consultant to the Federal Department of Education, National Education Association, Smithsonian Institution, New Jersey Department of Higher Education, Polish American Congress as well as educational consultant on the production of the educational film The Immigrant Experience and to PBS television on the production of a documentary The Polish Americans. He served in various capacities at the Kosciuszko Foundation, Polish American Historical Association (PAHA), and Polish American Congress. In 1984 he was awarded the “Haiman Medal” by PAHA and the “Distinguished Service Award in 2000 by the American Council for Polish Culture and “Commander’s Cross of Merit” from the President of Poland in Kraków. A native of Passaic, NJ he now lives with his wife Theresa in Bermuda Run, North Carolina.
